Bunkers & Badasses: The Berserker class

The Berserker wants to punch things over all else. Being a Vault Hunter, there is no shortage of things to punch. They also enjoy shooting things, just not as much as punching.

If you’re more familiar with D&D, this would be close to what a Barbarian class is. There is a variation of a rage system and it focuses on doing a lot of damage. This is not a subtle class.

I’ve never played Brick in the Borderlands games, but this class does seem like one that would let you have a lot of fun dealing as much crazy damage as possible.

The Berserker has a d10 melee die, and the stats modifiers go mostly into Damage (+2) and some in Speed (+1) and Accuracy (+1) and a big ol’ zero into Accuracy. When you learn that one of the favoured weapons is a rocket launcher, the focus on less accuracy makes a little sense.

This class really leans into the action skill ‘Berserk’ where you get to break out your fists for a couple of turns and start getting extra movement, a second melee attack, and each melee attack deals an extra die of damage. On top of that, you are regenerating 10 health for each turn you are berserking. You are going to want to berserk a lot!

Like all classes, there are some backgrounds to pick from. You can lean more towards damage, or maybe more into the demolition side.

  • Brutality: MOAR DAMAGE (+2 Damage), but you should probably stay quiet (-2 talk checks)
  • Leader: Less sneaky (-1 sneak) but get 50% to know somebody in a city
  • Dynamite: Focus damage on explosives (+2 Damage on explosives, like your rocket launcher), but you don’t handle things well (-2 Interact). Personally, I might push for taking Brutality for the damage bonus.
  • Inner Rage: Better mastery, which is good (+1 Mastery), but you shouldn’t go looking for things (-2 Search Checks)
  • Demolitionist: Offset the missing bonus to accuracy (+1 Accuracy), but this one also can’t handle things well (-2 Interact).

Each class has a skill tree that you use for levelling up. The Berserker tree has a lot of focus on increasing damage or healing to support the role that this class plays in the team (meaning they run up and bash on things).

For this particular class, the Enforcer archetype is probably what you want to go with. It’s really made for this type of role. You could add some interesting flavour by going with something like the Guardian or even an Elementalist if you wanted to go in a different direction.
