Converting a D&D Rogue into Star Wars 5e

How do you take a Dragonborn Rogue and transport them into the Star Wars (SW5e) universe ? Let’s find out!

I recently had my players do some dimension hopping where their characters were magically transported into alternate versions of themselves in another universe and found themselves on Tatooine. This meant converting some characters over for the session and in this article I’ll cover the party’s dragonborn rogue.

Our starting point: A level 3 Dragonborn Rogue with the Arcane Trickster archetype and the Criminal/Spy background.

AttributeD&DSW5eWhy that choice?
Race/SpeciesDragonbornTrandoshanBoth have that ‘lizard’ feeling and some special capabilities based on that. The draconic ancestry benefits do get lost, but the Trandoshan makes up for it with natural claw attacks and regeneration. Mechanically, both get a +2 to Strength, but the Trandoshan does the +1 to Wisdom instead of the Dragonborn’s Charisma bonus. I felt it was close enough for a one shot.
ClassRogueOperativeThe SW5e Operative is almost a direct clone of the Rogue class, including things like Sneak Attack, Expertise, Cunning Action, Uncanny Dodge, and Evasion.
ArchetypeArcane TricksterBeguiler PracticeMuch like the Arcane Trickster taps into magic, the Beguiler taps into the Force and gains some limited force powers. There are a lot of neat Operative archetypes, but none of the others tap into the Force. There is the Saboteur option for Tech casting, so if you are more Intelligence based as a character, that might be a better choice.
BackgroundCriminalCriminal: : StealthyThese backgrounds match up pretty nicely and even have the same specialty options.

The SW5e Operative is a very nice swap for the Rogue, making this character a very easy translation over. I did have to do a bit of work to map up the Force powers to the Arcane Trickster spells they had chosen, but the GM Binder I used (linked below) helped out with mapping them up pretty well. I think the one thing I wish I had mapped better was the Species as I felt like some of the very unique Dragonborn qualities were lost, and replaced by very unique Trandoshan abilities, but the match wasn’t as close as I’d like.
