Converting a D&D Barbarian into Star Wars 5e

How do you take a Goliath Barbarian and transport them into the Star Wars (SW5e) universe ? Let’s find out!

I recently had my players do some dimension hopping where their characters were magically transported into alternate versions of themselves in another universe and found themselves on Tatooine. This meant converting some characters over for the session and in this article I’ll cover the party’s goliath barbarian.

Our starting point: A level 3 Goliath Barbarian with the Path of the Totem archetype and the Outlander background.

AttributeD&DSW5eWhy that choice?
Race/SpeciesGoliathWookieeA “giant” character with a tribal background fit really well with the honourable Wookie species. Mechanically, the +2 STR and +1 CON attribute bonuses matched up exactly to the Goliath as well.
ClassBarbarianBerserkerThe SW5e Berserker class feels like a straight up copy of the Barbarian, including the Rage and Unarmored Defense features.
ArchetypePath of the TotemWarchief ApproachThe archetypes for Berserker were quite different from the Barbarian. For flavour, I went with the Warchief as this particular character was from a tribal village in the mountains and was a direct descendant of the current tribal chief.
BackgroundOutlanderBarbarian: BrawnyThe Barbarian and Outlander backgrounds match up pretty well thematically, and the Brawny fit in well with the overall character build of focusing on a strong, athletic character.

Since the archetypes didn’t really match up, I had to try to find a way to get something from the Path of the Totem into the character. This character had the Wolf totem, which provides damage resistance, and I did find the Dewback’s Instinct which provided additional resistances while raging.

One piece to consider here was the Wookiee language Shyriiwook. While Wookiee’s could understand the Galactic Basic in the Star Wars universe, their vocal chords cannot make the sounds so they only speak in Shyriiwook. It could have been fun for a few minutes to have our barbarian unable to communicate with his companions, but it would have been very frustrating for the players. For this reason, I added an understanding of Shyriiwook to all other party members. If they had been together for quite some time and working up from Level 1, I reasoned that they would have learned to understand their Wookiee friend, even if they couldn’t speak the language.
