Converting a D&D Wizard into Star Wars 5e

How do you take a halfling wizard and transport them into the Star Wars (SW5e) universe ? Let’s find out!

I recently had my players do some dimension hopping where their characters were magically transported into alternate versions of themselves in another universe and found themselves on Tatooine. This meant converting some characters over for the session and in this article I’ll cover the party’s halfling wizard.

Our starting point: A level 3 Halfling Wizard with the School of Illusion archetype and a Sage background.

AttributeD&DSW5eWhy that choice?
Race/SpeciesHalflingSquibBoth races are little folk with good dexterity and charisma. The character in question, being quite charismatic and prone to liking shopping, also fits in well with the Squib ‘Business Sense’. There are some other smaller species that I looked at as an equivalent for the halfling, so you have some options if a Squib doesn’t fit.
ClassWizardEngineerBy default a lot of casters would likely go for the full force caster Consular class, but I feel like Wizard’s are more Intelligence-based, and the Consular either goes strong with Charisma (Dark side) or Wisdom (Light side). The Engineer, however, is a full caster with technology and is based on Intelligence. This seemed like a good match and the tech powers lined up quite well with this character’s known spells. I was able to find 1-to-1 matches for almost all of their prepared spells.
ArchetypeSchool of IllusionCybertech EngineerI didn’t find any Engineering archetypes that matched up well to the illusion focus. There is an Illusionist archetype for the Scout, but not really applicable to the Engineer. I chose Cybertech only because the flavour of this archetype fit in well with the very specific story we were doing for the one-shot.
BackgroundSageStudent: LoremasterThis character loves books and knowledge, and the Student background with the Loremaster feat was the closest match to Sage I found. The benefits are not exactly the same, but it definitely fit with the character.

From here, the remaining work was mostly around using the GM Binder (linked below) to find matching tech powers to the wizard spells. The hardest part was deciding on which small race was going to be the translation over. I almost chose an astromech droid, just for fun, but decided against it at the last minute since this character is usually the “face” that speaks with most NPCs.

I don’t think every Wizard is going to want to be an Engineer though. Some players going to SW5e might prefer moving to the “Jedi Force Wizard” side of things, even if it means changing up the stats, so make sure you talk to your player!
