Converting a D&D Ranger into Star Wars 5e

How do you take an elven ranger and bring it over into the Star Wars (SW5e) universe ? Let’s find out!

I recently had my players do some dimension hopping where their characters were magically transported into alternate versions of themselves in another universe and found themselves on Tatooine. This meant converting some characters over for the session and in this article I’ll cover the party’s elven ranger.

Our starting point: A level 3 Wood Elf Ranger with the Drakewarden archetype and an Outlander background.

AttributeD&DSW5eWhy that choice?
Race/SpeciesWood ElfEchaniLike elves, the Echani offer a +2 bonus to Dexterity, but like the Wood Elf also offers a +1 to Wisdom. They are also a long-lived race with some martial bonuses, though quite different from elven bonuses. Unfortunately, they do not have the 35′ walking speed that Wood Elves get.
ClassRangerScoutWhile not exactly the same, the Scout is very similar to the Ranger in many ways, primarily the Pathfinder and Ranger’s Quarry abilities.
ArchetypeDrakewardenHunterThe drake companion is somewhat already covered in the Scout base class with the Tracker Droid Interface tech power, so I went with the Hunter to add a choice of ability (I chose Horde Breaker here) to offset the missing Drake bonuses.
CompanionDrakeTracker Droid Interface (Tech Power)The droid companion was a good option for roleplay, but didn’t give all the same bonuses that you get from the Drake.
BackgroundOutlanderNomad: SurvivalistBoth of these were focused on living in the wild and survival training. With the Nomad/Survivalist combo you can replicate the Athletics/Survival proficiencies of the Outlander and also get a decent equivalent to the Wanderer abilities of the Outlander.

From here, the remaining work was mostly around using the GM Binder (linked below) to find matching tech powers to the ranger spells. All in all, this was a fairly straight-forward conversion that allowed for most of the same gameplay mechanics. One trip-up came with the martial lightsaber I handed out to replace the ranger’s magic longsword: it was missing the finesse property! For a dexterity-heavy character who relied on that finesse property for better melee attacks the lightsaber didn’t work out as well for mapping. Next time I might go with the Vibrorapier as an equivalent instead.
