Hey friends, welcome to the table! We’re continuing the series of getting into the basics of tabletop role-playing games, and today I want to talk to you about classes.
Not every game has the concept of classes, but a lot of the systems that most people start learning are going to have this mechanic. Think of the class as your character’s job. It’s what they’ve been training to do, what they’re good at. If you’re in a fantasy setting, might be something like a wizard or maybe a soldier. If you’re in a sci-fi setting, maybe you’re something like a computer wiz or maybe some kind of bounty hunter or something like that.
I would say that a class generally tells you how do you start, what are you good at, and as you play, how do you get better? It’s kind of like a progression ladder for your career as an adventurer.
Now, depending on the system, you’re gonna have all kinds of choices. Some systems have a lot of classes, others kind of create a class and then subclasses within it. Or they add on extra things you can do. There’s multiclassing. It can get pretty complicated very quickly.
If you are just starting out, my suggestion would be: pick one class. Take one, probably, that doesn’t have a complex play structure that you can get started about learning the basic mechanics of the game, and then as you learn you can start branching out and learning other parts of the system.
Remember, you’re always welcome at the table!
