Hey friends, welcome to the table. Today we’re going to learn about what is a TTRPG?
So this acronym stands for Table Top Role-Playing Game. Thanks to the Internet, we can also do this with virtual table tops. What this means is that we get together to play a game. We try to play it usually on some sort of table, or a virtual one, and together we’re generally trying to play some kind of a character. We’re being someone we’re not. And that’s the role playing.
Different people like to play it different ways. Some systems are very straight forward, very simple on the mechanics, and that game is really about playing into your character, really immersing yourself in the role play aspect.
Other ones have much crunchier systems that are trying to be realistic, that have all kinds of rules that you have to learn. All in an attempt to try to make things balanced. It’s almost like they’re trying to replicate reality in a certain way so that you can have fair kind of war games with miniature figures and things like that.
There are all kinds of different ways and different systems and how you play. But generally you’re going to see a lot of people talk about D&D. D&D stands for Dungeons and Dragons, based on a very popular TTRPG that has been around for years and years and years.
So what is a TTRPG? The way I explained it to my kids is I call it for them the Adventure Game, cause that’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna get together, we’re gonna have some fun and we’re gonna go on an adventure together. You get to be whoever you want and we’re going to go through this and we’re going to use dice to try to figure out, when we can’t be sure what’s going to happen, how does luck play into it? And then see where the story goes! It’s a lot of storytelling.
Sometimes there can be a lot of dice that you need to figure out which ones you have to use, and other times it’s very simple. All it comes down to is trying to have fun with a group of friends or maybe your family, and being able to go and have a fantastic voyage somewhere.
Now, not all adventures are fantasy. In the traditional Dungeons And Dragons? Yes, there’s a lot of goblins and orcs and elves and dwarves and all that sort of fantasy stuff that you’ve seen. You can also have superhero ones or Star Wars or Star Trek. You’ve got infinite anime-based types of games. If there’s a world that can be created or one that exists, you can role play in that universe.
So when you get interested and you want to come to the table, think about what kind of game do you like to play? What’s the kind of world you want to be in? What kind of character would be really fun for you to just play as and develop and see where it goes.
Remember, you’re always welcome at the table!
