Showdown at sundown | A Tale from the Borderlands

Well this is awkward.

I’m not sure who’s getting these, but it’d be REAL great if you had been allowing them to go through to Penny all this time. Now, unfortunately, I’m going to have to track you down. I already have OTHER people I need to track down. But don’t you worry,  I’ll make sure you know every little thing along the way so you can see it coming. I don’t want you missing out. Everytime you hear that ping you’ll wonder if it’s today.

But it’s not today. Today was reunion day.

I only have a moment, because a giant killer death metal droid is about to destroy half this block, so I’m going to have to be brief. I got my Penny back. Albeit with some extra company in there.

The sun was going down when Min and I got into position on the rooftop. We couldn’t really see Fin or Zoe in the throngs down below, but we had a really good vantage point on the mob of psychos. And right there, flanked by the biggest meatheads I’ve seen in a few days, was Penny. She didn’t look quite the same as I remember, some sort of cybernetic implant in there. I don’t suppose you know about that, do ya? If you do, you might need to fire your tech team, because their work seems a little half-baked. It seemed to keep going in and out, like something was interfering with it. It wasn’t until later I figured out that there’s something else inside there with her, probably something like that thing I disintegrated in the security checkpoint.  I can’t be sure, of course, but the pieces fit based on what I was hearing on the comms.

Side note: Min turned out to be quite the sniper, who knew? She was able to get some serious damage done on the crowd while I tried to keep Penny pinned and thin out the mess below. There were just so many of them!

At first I couldn’t see the rest of the crew, but Zoe, Deathtrap, and Fin definitely started getting people’s attention near the back. One of those meaty bodyguards definitely took notice when Zoe opened fire and made the mistake of thinking he could squash that kid. Must not have seen Deathtrap, at least until it was too late. Poor guy got half his body squeezed out of him before getting a bullet to the head. Absolutely brutal. That was a lot of blood!

I couldn’t quite make out what was happening, since I was focused so much on keeping Penny pinned down, but it really seemed like Fin was pulling off being one of the escaping patients? I suppose he does fit in quite well with this gang. More than once I wasn’t sure which side he was on, but it seemed like one of the meatheads actually gave him his own gun? So much chaos.

Then, out of nowhere, I think I saw Min’s Bloodwing throw a grenade. It’s still real impressive when that happens, not gonna lie to ya. All in all, these security drones and psycho’s were not going to be able to stand up to the firepower coming from all around them. I’m real proud of how the crew set up for this. Those meatheads and Penny are tough, though.

Of course, it’s not like Penny hadn’t noticed us. Even at range, with some pretty heavy cover, she still managed to hit me in the shoulder. Dang that hurt! I had almost forgotten how good a shot she could be. Somehow she connected on comms, I wonder if that new add-on of hers helps with that. I could tell by what she was saying there were some conflicting feelings. Mostly conflicting between whether to rip my spine out personally or have the mob do it. Can’t say I blame her, not after what she’s been through these last two years. I earned that hate. And more.

Though it might have been a little less if you hadn’t been intercepting these, huh?

You’ll be happy to know she did her darndest to put a bullet in me, but I’ve kept a few tricks up my sleeves. Nothing like a little sentiment to cool the fire. With a little help from Kaylee, and some close-by cover from Min, we got her rage cooled off, at least for a moment. Hopefully the binders hold, she has  gotten out of them before.

[Sounds of yelling from the streets below… ]

Is Fin taking the mob for ice cream?

But that’s the least of the worries right now. Right now, SOMEBODY decided that my ignoring them and not putting a bullet in Penny’s skull warrants sending in a giant destruction machine that basically obliterated everything in sight without any effort. I didn’t get a good look, but it doesn’t look like that thing went after Zoe or Deathtrap, so I hope they’re safe. I’m not sure what’s going on down there, though…

It’s time for ice cream, I’ll be seeing you later.
