A Mystery Wrapped in a Riddle | A Tale from the Borderlands

Something doesn’t add up.

I hope you get the chance to listen to this one real soon, Penny. I really do.

I was wrong about that checkpoint, by the way. It was not friendly. Some sort of slimy thing jumped out of a Hyperion guard’s face and scared the slag out of me! We took it out, whatever it was. Managed to pull the guard to safety, too, but then the guards started yelling about us bringing some sort of brain worm thingy onto Promethea, then tried to tackle Min, and things got ugly quick. I’m pretty sure there’s not much left of one of them after Deathtrap got his claws in. Min did a good job of making a mess of the place with a whole lot of explosions, too. Not exactly the quietest arrival!

We made it through the first checkpoint, only to run into another guard almost immediately. Luckily, Fin had woken up by this point and showed up dressed like one of them. I think. It wasn’t the best disguise but it seemed to do the trick and was enough of a distraction for Fin to knock the guard out with that golden arm. Soldier-boy hit the ground like a crate of bricks.

After locking everybody up in an interrogation room, we made our way back to the ship to get our cargo. We got word that the delivery coordinates were not far, but we had a lot of crates to move and not much time before the next guard shift was going to show. Zoe managed to hack a Loader droid, which was impressive. I guess we have a Loader droid now! This kid always seems to have a trick up their sleeve. That was going to help with carrying some of those crates, but not enough to get them all to the delivery point.

I flagged down a taxi that seemed to want to charge a fair bit for delivery, but in this type of bind we can’t be too choosy. We were in a rush and that driver knew it. With a loader, a taxi, and Fin and Deathtrap carrying the rest of the load, we made our way to Moxxi’s place nearby. Some sort of soup kitchen, I guess? That would make sense that they need the rations to hand out. A nice five thousand credits will help pay for the crew and ship needs, if we ever make it back. It seems like our arrival here was not entirely unanticipated.

Our comms started malfunctioning, or hacked, or something… Some voice, that Zoe explained was likely Handsome Jack, made it clear that we were going to need to visit the medical facility and help out with what you started. What a coincidence, exactly where we were headed next! I had hoped we’d find you there still.  It didn’t seem like Zoe was being given much choice in the matter, and with the destruction at the security checkpoint it looks like the others were being lumped in. No backing out now! The others should have stayed on Wonderland, I guess, but now I’ve dragged them into this mess.

After that run-in with ghost voice Jack, Fin smashed his comms, and Zoe claims the system is pretty much haunted. Don’t like the sound of that, much. Given how much tech is around this Hyperion place, a haunted system is going to make disappearing an awfully hard thing to do. But right now, you are the one that seems to be on everybody’s mind. I’m feeling a might bit jealous!

We saw your work, by the way.

A lot of damage. A lot of blood on the walls. A lot of bodies. Not exactly surprising, but it didn’t seem like the work of a crazed mob lashing out at everything in sight.

You were precise. Specific, even. Were you hoping I would notice? What message are you trying to send? What did you want me to find there? Other than an unpaid bill that the desk clerk was pretty serious about me paying. We’ll see about that one later.

We asked a few questions upstairs, where it seemed there was very little sign of your visit. But we got some very firm replies. Fin got disintegrated for even pushing back a little. They are very serious about getting you back. Pretty much right now. I did not want to get sent to a New-U in this place and I was already sold on coming for you before I walked through that door, so I agreed real quick. This way, though, I got access to some files and took a look to see how this all started out.

Somebody helped you. That’s for sure.

Who was it? Did you start this? Do you know who did? And why do I feel like whomever is behind this has orchestrated this whole thing from the beginning? It don’t smell right.

This feels like a distraction. And we’re the pawns.

There are just too many coincidences. Did you know Zoe’s been here before? She worked hard to get away from all this and now I’ve brought her back to this mess. I wonder what’s the deal there? She hasn’t explained much. And this Jack voice in the system? And now somebody gets you cracked out with your old revolver? I need a second to figure this all out, but we don’t have that kind of time.

(The sound of a loud battle can be faintly heard in the background. Shouts and smashes are dimly heard.)

Those security droids who seem to be resisting some of your charm? That would be Zoe’s work, by the way. I would not underestimate her, if I were you. Just a heads up, for ol’ times sake.

I’ll see you soon, one way or another. In case this is the last time I can say this: I love you, Penny.

(A loud *CLICK* is heard, like the sound of an ammo clip being loaded)

Give ‘em hell, Sheriff.
