Let’s dive into the Bunkers & Badasses classes! Today I’m going to look at the Commando. If you were a fan of the Axton character from the Borderlands games, this is it!
The Commando is an ex-military who racked up a high body count during their days in the service. When they need to deal extra Damage, they drop their Sabre Turret into the fray to get things done. They are a one-person wrecking crew.
Bunkers & Badasses PHB, Commando Class, by Nerdvana
The Commando is no longer in the military, but they never lost their style. They’ve removed any official patches or insignia of their previous employers (except the ones genetically grafted onto their skin, anyway), but they still look ready to drop into any hot zone in the six galaxies.
On the surface it is very similar to the Soldier class in that you have a turret at your side and you have an ex-military background, but when you start to dig into the skill trees and the backgrounds that’s where things start to seem a little different.
If you like that ex-military fighter feel, either the Soldier or the Commando could fit for you. The Soldier will tend to help the rest of the party more as a leader and a bit of a medic, while the Commando focuses more on one job: getting damage done .
Action Skill: Sabre Turret
A major component of this class is the Sabre Turret that can you toss out for two turns and it just blasts a bunch of damage (1d8/hit) at the nearest enemy and taunts it. With 40 armor and the taunt, it essentially becomes your tank for those two turns.
Backgrounds
Like all classes, there are some backgrounds to pick from. You can lean more towards damage, or maybe more towards speed, and some accuracy or mastery. But for the most part, the backgrounds focusing on more combat bonuses are better for this class.
- Divorcee: Essentially a carrying capacity buff. +1 Potion slot and +1 Max grenades, but the cost is influencing folks with your mouth (-2 talk checks)
- Revengeance: Very focused (-2 insight checks) but now you hurt people more (+1 damage)
- Veteran: You know your military stuff (+2 Insight Military Checks) and move faster (+1 Speed) but now you have a hard time finding things, probably because your eyes are old (-2 on Search Checks).
- Whistleblower: Better mastery, which is good (+1 Mastery), but now you gotta be careful everywhere (25% chance you are spotted each time you enter a town)
- Company Man: Better accuracy (+1 Accuracy), with a 50% chance your Contact on the inside hates you. I have no idea how a Bunker Master might use this in your game, but I know I would have a lot of fun with that!
Skill Tree
Each class has a skill tree that you use for levelling up. The Commando tier skills are all about going faster, having more accuracy, or increasing damage. This type of character is focused on themselves and doing MOAR DAMAGE!
Archetypes
For this particular class, the Deadeye archetype could be helpful for focusing on doing more damage. This will help with the focus on individual combat expertise. You could also try to offset the individual focus by picking up the Guardian archetype to get a little bit of that healing aspect.
