Converting a D&D Cleric into Star Wars 5e

How do you take a Dwarven Cleric and transport them into the Star Wars (SW5e) universe ? Let’s find out!

I recently had my players do some dimension hopping where their characters were magically transported into alternate versions of themselves in another universe and found themselves on Tatooine. This meant converting some characters over for the session and in this article I’ll cover the party’s dwarven cleric. Spoiler: this one didn’t go as well as I hoped!

Our starting point: A level 3 Dwarven Cleric with the Forge Domain archetype and the Guild Artisan background.

AttributeD&DSW5eWhy that choice?
Race/SpeciesDwarf (Hill Dwarf)GandLike the Dwarf, Gand are a stocky species but are a little more insect-like in nature. They also have the +2 Constitution racial bonus. Mechanically, the Gand give +1 Intelligence, while the Hill Dwarf has the +1 Wisdom, so if you wanted to stay closer on stats bonuses there might be other options. Both the Weequay and the Advozse have the +2 CON/+1 WIS, along with some others, but none of them really have the same shorter stature that is so traditional for the dwarves.
ClassClericConsularI was torn going for a medical Scholar or a Consular healer, but in the end I went the way of the Force and a Jedi because it felt more like a ‘divine’ character. However, these classes are really dissimilar in the abilities they gain and how they progress. I think bringing a cleric over to SW5e is really going to depend on how the player plays their cleric and what powers they use.
ArchetypeForge DomainWay of the SageWay of the Sage allows you to flex the healing powers of the Force, which at least can mimic some of the healing capabilities of a Cleric. However, this doesn’t really mimic the Forge domain capabilities.
BackgroundGuild ArtisanJedi: : CrafterFlavour-wise these are similar, and the two can be matched up with granted proficiency if you choose Insight and Persuasion from the Jedi background options (Investigation and Lore are other options).

I found it difficult to port over this character and get something that matched up exactly right. I decided to make the character more of a healer, but getting the balance of combat fighter, battle caster, and some healing was not really achieved with this build. The species also didn’t match up exactly how I’d like, either. All in all, I probably would investigate looking for some other options on this one, perhaps a non-Force caster as I didn’t really find much in the Guardian or Sentinel that fit well either.

If you found a way to build a more battle cleric build in SW5e, I would love to hear about it!
